Flash fiction and surreal art inspired by vintage curiosities.
I’m Derek L. Zboran, a writer and educator with a taste for vintage things and strange tales.
Old advertisements, magazine illustrations, pulp fiction magazines, and bits of twentieth-century popular culture get my imagination going. I’m drawn to their intriguing faces, familiar promises, glimpses of another time, and forgotten dreams.
What happens when you take something vintage and give it an unexpected story? Fun With Fiction is my writing portfolio where I explore those possibilities through short fiction and surreal collage.
I live in Rolla, Missouri, where I work in higher education and facilitate Rolla Writers Club as well as participate in Toastmasters International. When I take vacation time, you’ll probably find me exploring art museums and chilling in jazz clubs.
I hope you find something here that entertains you, surprises you, and perhaps even inspires you to follow a weird curiosity of your own.
I write to discover what I know.
